Rea Ashby was just your average vampire. She had a cat, a nemesis, and a best friend to share in all her irreverent adventures. Each day was endlessly predictable as the next, until a representative from the ominous Vardoc Council came to town and took her and the rest of the vampire youth with him when he left.
Forcibly relocated to a monastery in the middle of the Canadian Rockies, Rea and her friends find themselves in the middle of a constant struggle. A struggle to train, a struggle to survive, but most of all, a struggle not to lose themselves in the process.
Tensions are stretched to the brink as Rea makes a forbidden human friend in town, and in the process, discovers a secret that shakes the very foundations of everything she’s been led to believe. But Rea’s not the only one with a secret. The Council has a secret of its own. One that could change everything…
Wow. Absolutely, WOW!
Natalie’s writing is absolutely amazing. I love YA literature, but I always find myself frustrated at the lack of depth of character as well as the complete predictability of the plot; Sparks and Ashes is new and exciting! It is not limited by the genre, but instead finds ways to use the freedoms of YA to explore this world through the eyes of a protagonist that is unlike any I have ever read before.
