Kilenya Series Books One, Two, and Three

A new land. A mysterious key. A quest to save the world.

Over 85,000 downloads!

Jacob Clark is a typical 14-year-old. At least, until a pack of wolves chases him out of our world and into Eklaron. There, he discovers he has special powers—ones that can help the people in his new world. As long as the covetous Lorkon don’t catch up with him first.

To save himself and his new people, Jacob must go on a potentially deadly quest. With no one to trust and no way to return home, Jacob has to make a choice: risk his life or do nothing and put Earth and Eklaron in grave danger.

Kilenya Series Books One, Two, and three are the first three of six books in a best-selling series of YA paranormal stories. If you like fast-paced adventure, magical quests, and original monsters and magic systems, then you’ll love this installment in Andrea Pearson’s Kilenya series.

I am 59 years old and I really enjoyed this book. It is a great story with twists surprises a little romance and forever magic. For me, the clean language is a plus, even when you knew people were angry or upset and all emotional. “Jacob,” the main character amazed me with his courage and strength for a young man his age. He didn’t allow anything stop him from fulfilling his mission and his magic was not what you usually find in other books of this genre. I love Andrea’s books and her style.

The Time Hunters

From bestselling author Carl Ashmore, ‘THE TIME HUNTERS’ is the first chapter in the five book series for children of all ages.

Becky is a typical thirteen year old girl. She likes Facebook, gossiping and plenty of sleep. So when she and her brother, Joe, are invited to stay with their ‘loony’ Uncle Percy at his stately home, she thinks it’ll be the worst summer ever. What she doesn’t realise is that Bowen Hall is also home to a baby Triceratops, two Sabre-tooth tigers and the mythic hero, Will Scarlet…

‘The Time Hunters’ is a thrilling adventure that takes Becky, Joe, Uncle Percy and Will on a quest through time to find the legendary Golden Fleece.

Praise for The Time Hunters:

‘From every angle, it’s an excellent work. This series couldn’t ask for a more vibrant opening chapter.’ KIRKUS REVIEWS (awarded the KIRKUS STAR *)

‘I really enjoyed reading THE TIME HUNTERS. You start off the action with a bang, drawing the reader in right away. Your writing is strong, and in places has a classic feel….It has terrific potential.’ HARPER COLLINS

***** Carl Ashmore has written an entertaining book that children will love. READERS FAVOURITE

‘This is a wonderful adventure. It has the magic of Lewis Carroll and Kenneth Grahame, the inventiveness of Roald Dahl and the writing skill of Rudyard Kipling in my opinion. It is the natural successor to Harry Potter. Brilliant!’

fog

Island of Fog

ISLAND OF FOG is a story of intrigue and conspiracy. The reader follows Hal Franklin as he struggles to accept that he and his friends are something more than ordinary children, and that their parents have been covering up the truth the whole time. With their trust shaken and the unexpected arrival of a strange woman from Out There, the children hide their frightening shapeshifting abilities and pretend nothing is wrong.

This is a well written sci-fi novel. There is that ‘it could happen’ quality that you find in Dean Koontz novels. The suspense works and doesn’t frustrate the reader. It makes you want to read the next installment! –Writer’s Digest

Fireflies

Ever wondered what a hero looks like?
You’ll be surprised.

SHORT Book Description
Trapped in a small town over the summer, a lonely, middle-grade computer nerd, risks everything to make friends in the real world. As he adapts more and more to 3-dimensional people, the friendship he comes to cherish beyond all others turns out to be the one most threatening to his new-found place in the world.

It wasn’t. It was much more.

It was a page-turning coming of age story about a boy who was uncomfortable in his own skin. He eventually sheds that skin to meet new friends. With those new friends, he finds he can find his own “adventures”. Each character is very well fleshed out. I can put a faces from my own childhood on many of them. Fireflies is a book I’d recommend to anyone at any age (especially those who have ever felt isolated). In fact, I’m going to request it at my local library.

Peanut & Sparky

Peanut and Sparky is gorgeous illustrated children’s book about a silly little baby squirrel named Peanut and a feisty Golden Lab named Sparky. Children books can be very amusing with such an unlikely duo!

The illustrations in the kid’s picture ebook are optimized to be superior quality, vivid, and bright for tablets and e-readers to improve the story and bring it to life for early and beginner readers!

You Are Best Friends with a Squirrel and a Dog!?

Yep. My best friends are a sassy little squirrel named Peanut and my Golden Labrador Retriever name Sparky. They are a silly duo that you’d never expect. My neighbors look at me awkward when I take Peanut and Sparky out for a walk on separate leashes. I just smile and wave.

How did you get a pet squirrel?

Now that’s a pretty funny story.. He’s not really a pet. He’s ACTUALLY family now. I’ve known Peanut since he was a baby. That’s what this book is about! It’s the story of how he joined our family. I do not want to give away the whole story!

How did you get a squirrel and dog to get along?

When I figure it out, I’ll let you know! Peanut tries to ride Sparky like a horse. Sparky does not always like this. They quarrel from time to time just like a brother and sister would, but they always make up and get along.

What did Mama say when Peanut and Sparky wrecked the house!?

Ummm… No comment. Actually I gotta go. Uhhh… Here comes Mama!

Check out the book for the rest of the story!

Peanut and Sparky is a gorgeous picture book for kids and children. It is excellent for beginner readers and also as a bedtime story. You and your child will fall in love with the creative artwork and the beautifully-crafted children’s story. It took over 100 days just to create these heartwarming illustrations! We firmly believe in only the highest quality for an optimal reading experience.

Qualify

The year is 2047. An extinction-level asteroid is hurtling toward Earth, and the descendants of ancient Atlantis have returned from the stars in their silver ships to offer humanity help.

But there’s a catch.

They can only take a tiny percent of the Earth’s population back to the colony planet Atlantis. And in order to be chosen, you must be a teen, you must be bright, talented, and athletic, and you must Qualify.

Sixteen-year-old Gwenevere Lark is determined not only to Qualify but to rescue her entire family.

Because there’s a loophole.

If you are good enough to Qualify, you are eligible to compete in the brutal games of theAtlantis Grail, which grants all winners the laurels, high tech luxuries, and full privileges of Atlantis Citizenship. And if you are in the Top Ten, then all your wildest wishes are granted… Such as curing your mother’s cancer.

There is only one problem.

Gwen Lark is known as a klutz and a nerd. While she’s a hotshot in classics, history, science, and languages, the closest she’s come to sports is a backyard pool and a skateboard.

This time she is in over her head, and in for a fight of her life, against impossible odds and world-class competition—including Logan Sangre, the most amazing guy in her school, the one she’s been crushing on, and who doesn’t seem to know she exists.

Because every other teen on Earth has the same idea.

You Qualify or you die.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland — 1885 Edition

Dodgson’s tale was published in 1865 as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by “Lewis Carroll” with illustrations by John Tenniel. The first print run of 2,000 was held back because Tenniel objected to the print quality. A new edition was quickly printed, released in December of the same year but carrying an 1866 date.

The entire print run sold out quickly. Alice was a publishing sensation, beloved by children and adults alike. Among its first avid readers were Queen Victoria and the young Oscar Wilde. The book has never been out of print. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has been translated into at least 174 languages. There have now been over a hundred English-language editions of the book, as well as countless adaptations in other media, especially theatre and film. (more at wisehouse-classics.com)

Spike, The Not So Nice Dinosaur

With this book the author managesto offer profound message for young readers, the concepts that areusually difficult for children to understand. Besides being great storyfor preschoolers, this book also could be recommended for early readersto improve their reading skills – therefore parents should be advised to encourage children independent reading. Spike, The Not So Nice Dinosaur can be fully recommended as book that speaks about the touchy subject, dealing with it in a great way. Overall, we liked the book very much.

Highly recommended, P. K. Luker

Cora and the Nurse Dragon

Cora would love to save up enough money to buy a pet dragon, but with her dad’s income as a gardener, she has to make do with buying small kits of dragon eggs and hoping to hatch a good one. So far she’s gotten only the tiny mayflies, but her luck changes when she rescues a thrown-away egg and out hatches a supposedly extinct nurse dragon. Cora immediately forms a bond with the dragon, but the little guy lands them in some difficult situations…

I feel like this book should be made into a major motion picture; it’s that awesome. The writing is superb, the characters are fun, and the story is engaging, to say the least. To be honest, I can’t even come across anything negative to say about this book. I loved it so much, and I look forward to reading many more of Heidi’s books!

paper

Now I Am Paper

I remember: a gentler sound,
The forest rustling in the rain
Leaves were swirling all around
I heard soft footsteps up the lane…

The paintings for the cover and interior pages are watercolor on paper, done by the author. She drew the text for each verse by hand, in a ‘Gothic’ font that is as flowery as the tree used to be in its prime. Children would love the highly decorative style of the writing, and the sudden long strokes that express the emotions in this story.

Each verse appears on a paper leaf that floats over transparent paper in the shape of an ellipse, which symbolizes a puddle of tears at the foot of the tree.

If you liked The Giving Tree, you will love this picture book for kids, which mothers and fathers find utterly fascinating.

This book will help your child fall asleep in no time!

Why?

Because as a child, I always had trouble falling asleep. All of the bedtime stories had somefrightening plots or were packed with scenes that kept me too interested and awake!

That’s why I decided to make a story that is engaging yet soothing and calming using appropriate relaxing imagery and wording. I hope that the bedtine story  “Jack’s Relaxing Journey” will help your child fall asleep faster and promote healthy sleep habits.

This is more than just a bedtime story, it is also a relaxation and sleeping aid for children. – Stefan Cockroft

“In a faraway forest, under a great oak tree,

stands a pastry shop offering goodies and tea.

A lush green corner where the neighbors meet,

Forest folk, some strange, but others quite neat.”

This an interesting short read. A creature colored emerald green hatched from an enormous egg by the tree. A dragon hatches who loves to eat, play and just be happy. The baby dragon becomes a giant adult dragon over time that can breathe fire. This was an interesting read because a simple story book for kids contains so much information. I haven’t read one of there picture books in the longest time ever. Sometimes life’s lesson’s can simply be put into short, easy-to-read picture books simple enough for a kindergartener to read and understand.

Fairy Eyeglasses

A 12,000 word children’s fantasy story.

The author does a very good job at blending the whimsical aspects of the story with the more realistic moments, achieving a nice balance that makes the story very pleasing to read. She’s also very good at developing characters. The children really speak and behave like children, and the grown-ups are relatable and believable. By the way, I really like Cassie’s parents. Instead of dismissing their daughter’s revelation about seeing fairies as a ridiculous lie, which is what many other parents would have done in their place, they choose to trust her and give her sensible advice.

Cassie is a very likeable protagonist in my opinion. She usually tries to do the right thing, even when that goes against her personal preferences and interests. She’s also a girl who understands the value of friends.

And now that I mention it, I’ve got to compliment the author on how she handled all the friendship-related issues presented in the story. I felt for Cassie, who missed her best friend Daisy, and I felt even more for Bianca, who didn’t even have a friend to miss, but the author’s approach to these serious topics isn’t heavy-handed at all. The realism doesn’t affect the story’s overall light-hearted atmosphere, but said atmosphere doesn’t trivialize the characters’ issues either.

“Fairy Eyeglasses” is a charming, entertaining, and well-written story. I’m happy it’s part of a series, because I want to see more of the author’s ideas about those fascinating fairies and the humans who unexpectedly detect their existence.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. Set in a Southern antebellum society that had ceased to exist about twenty years before the work was published, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an often scathing satire on entrenched attitudes, particularly racism.

Perennially popular with readers, ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN has also been the continued object of study by literary critics since its publication. It was criticized upon release because of its coarse language and became even more controversial in the 20th century because of its perceived use of racial stereotypes and because of its frequent use of the racial slur “nigger”, despite strong arguments that the protagonist and the tenor of the book are anti-racist. (more at wisehouse-classics.com)

Sail on a pirate ship, dance with wild animals, go on adventurous, heart throbbing expeditions… it’s all possible with the magic hat!

Hold on tight, because you are about to go on an EPIC adventure!

Are you ready… let’s begin!

This book is ten chapters of wonderful. I read it to my son who is four over the course of two nights. The book is well written and my son found it extremely entertaining. My son really loved that David liked to collect hats (among other things) as my son has a number of hats himself. My son who is four was able to follow along with the story with no difficulty but he did ask me several times why there were no pictures. While I understand that the book was probably intended for children older than he is I do think that even a few doodles here and there would have added to the story all that much more. This book really forces you to use your imagination and that is something I loved about it. My son and I discussed several aspects throughout the book from sharing and having a good attitude. I always enjoy books that make it possible for us to talk about what happens. As always happens in a good book a lesson is learned in the end and every ends up happy. This is the type of book that you can read over and over without it losing its magic. Overall I am very happy with this book and I would recommend it to anyone.

Or is it John Conroy, a powerful schemer, in love with Alix’s beautiful spendthrift mother, and desperate to get his hands on Alix’s inheritance? Either way, Isabella’s feelings of responsibility for Alix and her loyalty to the gang who saved her life, are tearing her apart.

Instead of taking advantage of Alix, will Isabella puts her own needs aside and cast herself into mortal danger to save her friend? Only the harsh lessons of Isabella’s past can help her decide if she should leave Alix to her fate – a fate tied up with Isabella’s own.
A fate which will have consequences far beyond those she could ever have imagined.

“Parry’s descriptions are as varied as they are rich, from the scents of Abhaya’s Indian healing herbs to the sounds of London’s bustling streets and the opulence in the British royalty. A sizeable cast of beautifully developed, memorable characters makes solving the mystery even more deliciously puzzling, and readers will be guessing to the surprising end.
Imaginative and touching; like India, a sparkling jewel in the crown.”

Peanut’s Mistake

“The Pumpkinheads series involves protagonists who represent a mix of racial backgrounds and ethnicities. The characters appear woven throughout the series and each one seems to have his or her own distinct personality. The stories help children build awareness and acceptance of their feelings by portraying the often turbulent emotions that children experience at this young age. I found the books to be a great tool for teaching about emotions and delivering positive messages.Children can become attached to this series’ particular characters and literary style, leading them to be eager and excited to read more.”

What The Fox Learnt

Four fox tales from Aesop’s fables presented with modern illustrations: The Fox and the Crow, The Fox and the Goat, The Fox and the Grapes and The Fox and the Cat. These are short stories that are fun and easy to read. Each story is summarized with a moral that you might have even heard of.

I found this for free for my kindle, I has these stories when I was young and loved them. And they were just as great today for my 2 and 4 yr old sons. These are like Aesops fables where the fox is in each story and learns a lesson in each short story. The crow and the cheese, the fox and the grapes etc… there were even some new ones I had not read before. They held my son’s attention while waiting for his Dr appt, and even made him laugh out loud. Highly recommend.

This free kindle book contains four important Aesop fables that children should know because they teach children how to behave and how to be successful. The stories are decorated with pictures. One tale teaches children to avoid flattery, a behavior children frequently adopt because it makes them feel good. Another warns them not to trust someone who is looking out for their own interest. The third shows them the psychological truth that people despise what they cannot get – an attitude they should not develop because they should learn to persevere. The fourth teaches the lesson of quality being more important than quantity.

Holly and Eliza’s Big Day: The Easiest Way To Teach Your Child Not Talk To Strangers

Join Holly As She Learns Her Life Lesson About Importance Of Not Talking To Strangers

Holly and Eliza’s Big Day is well written and teaches your young children an extremely valuable lesson as to why they should never speak to strangers.

I attempted to read this out loud to my 4 year old granddaughter. In all honesty she is an antsy little one that doesn’t stay focused for long. While she continued to move around and fiddle with distractions I continued reading. In the end, she seems to have gotten the message. She was more interested in how the ballet class went. LOL. I suspect we will need to read this book several times over the next couple of years, before she really understands well enough to apply the lesson to her young life.

I think the book is well worth reading to any young person. Even to a tween as a refresher.
The book is detailed and is not so long that it is a chore for the reader or the listener. I chose mid-day to read this to my granddaughter, but I think this may have been better after a bath and before bed. Since I am grandma, I don’t often have the evening time with her, but I did share the book with my daughter so that she and her husband can read it to her during wind down times.

Elphie and Dad go on an Epic adventure

Now on to the story of Elphie and Dad, who go on an Epic adventure. Elphie and Dad are son and father elephants. Elphie is adorable, and when dad suggests a trip to the market Elphie decides that idea sounds far too boring. When Dad proposes making their trip to the market part of an Epic Adventure, Elphie is ready to go. He grabs his sword and cape on his way out the door of course.

Elphie has an active imagination, which helps him battle tigers, lizards and dragons, and rescue princesses. But sometimes he’s so busy imagining that he puts himself in some precarious situations. Dad certainly has his hands full keeping Elphie safe, instructing him all the while on how to have an epic adventure, but to do it carefully. But that’s what Dads do after all.

This is an awesome story of a loving and caring relationship between father and son. The illustrations are colorful, vibrant and charming. It would make an excellent bedtime story or a wonderful book to read to preschoolers during circle time. It can be used to discuss with youngsters how everyday chores can be fun if you use your imagination and stay safe in the process. Wonderful!

It’s cute and super adorable. I can’t wait for my nephew and niece to explore this material. It’s very attractive, I mean the picture itself is very much child friendly. All of the stories in here will definitely enjoy all the children out there specially my nephew and niece. A book that crafted for young ones who loves to read, no wonder this book Is highly appreciated and rated.

I just love to look at books like this, although my children are doing their thing in college at some point I will become a Grandfather and I am always looking for these types of books. Just to see what will be available when Grandchildren are hanging out with the old dude. It’s my hope that they will get a better education in public school than I did, not that the education I was given at the time was not deemed good just that education has to be more accelerated these day. The USA is way behind the educational curve and we have got to catch up.

This is a picture book for children. The installations in the book are very good and if you didn’t know children are stimulated to learn with visuals so this book if used correctly will teach your children something about these Animals.

Minecraft Box Set: Diary of a Minecraft Adventure Book 1-3

May 12, 2015
Dear diary—

Wait, no. There’s no way I’m starting off like that. This is an explorer’s journal, not a book about my middle school crushes.

Adventurer’s Log, Day 1:
Unknown time—perhaps morning

I, Sir Benjamin Shortsword, arrived in the new world today, with the blessings of my people ringing in my ears, and outfitted solely with this pencil and diary. Stevespeed to me on this dark and dangerous quest, filled with unknown monsters and devilish evils. May I endure with the perseverance of our founding father, Steve, and fight till victory is won, or until I meet my bitter end in death. I shall fight on, never failing to—

Oh, look, a sheep.

Unknown time— late evening

Enough flowery talk… I should probably just tell you what’s going on.

Zack and Zebo: Book One
Read this book for FREE right now!

What Are You and Where Are You From?

Zack Benefeld has just completed a very stressful week at school – exam week! All he wants to do is kick back and play some video games. But the cosmos has something different in store…

I am 9 years old and I thought this book was awesome! It’s about a boy named Zack who has a tough week at school being exam week and all. I haven’t had exams yet but have had lots of big tests so know what its like. But in this story something exciting happens and Zack meets an alien called Zebo with a squeaky childlike voice which I think would sound soooo cute. I thought the story was interesting and I’ve never read an alien story like this one before.

What was cool about it was that the alien wanted to learn more about Zack and wanted him to do what he normally does but it was hard for him because Zack couldn’t stop thinking about the alien. Out of the story, Greg is my favorite character and what Greg said was so0o0o0o0o0o funny about the “….…drawings to prove it!” and his one word answers when he got to Zack’s home and his protection hat. LOL. And hopefully I’ll have my own AREA52 one day. =) This book is super awesome, fun, exciting and interesting all rolled into one and I can’t wait to read book 2 to see what going to happen to Zebo.

Holly Goes Holiday Shopping

Join Holly As She Learns Her Life Lesson About Importance Of Thinking About Others’ Feelings

This will mark the end of my being a regular reviewer, but just wanting to pass on the last of my Christmas reads for others to enjoy this holiday season with a short, sweet review. Holly Goes Christmas Shopping was the kind of book that had you disliking the typical tho self-centered nature of the young girl at first blush until Mom intervened and taught her some valuable lessons. For that I liked the book and awarded it four star

To help teach children consideration for how others think. My four year old granddaughter had a bit of trouble at first because no one she knows has siblings, and most of her friends are her age. She had no one younger to think about. Happily, her mother’s best friend had a baby recently (how could I possibly forget the video of her dancing in the elevator to meet baby Kate? She’s been friends with her since her mommy started showing!) and she was able to realize Kate would like a baby toy. I have told her that Holly’s daddy took Holly out, just he and Holly, for dinner and looking for mommy a present. What a great book that prompts that from a four year old!

The Witch With The Glitch

By Adam Maxwell

Nina, Ivy and Oswald know a huge secret. There is a hidden room in the Lost Bookshop and the books inside are magic, transporting the children to untold adventure.

When they find themselves zapped by the wand of a witch with a glitch they begin a race against time to reverse the spell. They must find the mysterious Izzy before the clock strikes midnight on Halloween or risk being stuck in the fairytale land forever.

The Witch with the Glitch is an exciting, funny and thrilling chapter book for middle grade readers that’s sure to have you desperate for just one more page.

Nina, Oswald and Ivy enter a different world whilst they are visiting the Lost Bookshop. They meet a witch, have a spell put on them and find themselves in the middle of a magical situation in which there is a race against time to get out of. The story is fast paced, exciting and entertaining.

The book introduces the characters in a quirky, magical, setting (the bookshop). The three children are believable, full of character and have realistic friendships and bickering. Nina’s Uncle and Aunty’s magical rambling bookshop is an excellent portal from which adventures can spring. I enjoyed the way that the book talk to the reader at times during the story and the imaginative humour and excitement throughout the story. This is the first book I have read in the ‘Lost Bookshop Adventures’ series and I will certainly look for more. Highly recommended.

fairy bargain books

The Water Lily Fairy

By Mary Ann Vitale

The Water Lily Fairy is a story of a fairy who was curious about the people in Corleone, Sicily. She hid as a water lily in a pond among other water lilies. The fairy wanted to do some nice things for those people by showering them with different gifts every day.

When a group of fairies fly over a village, one fairy elects not to fly on, but stay and hide amongst the water lilies. Cleverly camouflaged as a lily bud, she is able to hear the conversations of the children nearby. Later she leaves the safety of the lily pond to look around. She flies over the village and notices how poor the people are. She then makes a kind, conscious decision to help them. But, after the first gift of rose petals, which lifts their day, the children want more. After which, the adults have a suggestion too.

This short little book is well-written and nicely illustrated. For young children who believe in fairies (and I am assuming all do), this is just right – short enough and bright enough to hold their attention to the end. I am not sure about the message of giving someone everything they ask for, but there is certainly a good message about helping those less fortunate and how giving has its own rewards.

This is a sweet little book and I can imagine it will be enjoyed by a lot of children. Five stars for the kind fairy.

If You Have A Hat

By Gerald Hawksley

“If you have a hat
Put it on your head.

If you have a bedbug
Tuck him up in bed!”

Simple silly rhyming text and jolly pictures make this an ideal book for sharing with children. Encourage children to make up their own silly rhymes!

A great rhyming picture book for ages 2 and up, and ideal for beginner readers, too.
Now available in paperback, as well!

When my 3 year old daughter asked for an ereader last Christmas, she received an Android tablet with Kindle for Android (as well as other ebook applications). It seems that only recently have illustrated, color children’s books begun to come to the Kindle. So I was elated to find an indie illustrated, color children’s book!

The cute, colorful pictures are great even for children that can’t yet read – they can guess the rhyme from the picture, as well as try to find the bird in each picture. The easy to read rhymes are great for new readers. The “story” itself is cute and kept my daughter hooked. This book also has much better formatting than any other illustrated children’s Kindle book I have seen.

Angels Club

By Courtney Vail and Sandra Howell

Hola, Cuties! I’m Jacinda Gonzalez, almost twelve. Although I think I’m pretty nice, not to mention way cool and one of the most knowledgeable people in all things horse, I just can’t make any friends in my new school. The only things flying my way are totally rude insults. The horseback riding therapy farm where I volunteer becomes my perfect escape from mean bullies. And when Angel, a scrawny, muddy American Curly, shows up as rescue, no one but me can see her potential and lovableness, so I take her on as a project horse to get her ready for sale. But, the thing is, I don’t want them to sell her. She’d be so perfect for therapy. So perfect. Now, if only I could prove it.

Anyway, Angel’s sugar-candy personality inspires me to be sweet in spite of bad things happening to me. So, of course, I can’t resist the urge to make the world a whole lot brighter. Come on in and see how I do it!

I received this book in exchange for a fair review. That said, this was a very intriguing book. Here we have Jacinda. She is a bullied kid in her new school and she decides to fight meanness in the world by doing sweet things and good deeds for people. Angel is a new mangy horse that shows up at the therapeutic riding farm where she volunteers. Angel’s sweetness inspires her to be kind despite bad things happening to her. Classic preteen, middle school angst. Who didn’t go through this in some way or another?? Great read.

apple kindle free books

Apple vs. Asparagus

By Tracy Wainwright

Asparagus wants to play with Apple, but is turned away because he’s a vegetable. Apple runs off with his friends Apricot and Avocado. Soon, more fruits and vegetables join the two sides, each arguing their group is the best. Iceberg Lettuce comes along and says no, those thing don’t matter. The greens should stick together. Will these healthful foods ever figure out that they are all nutritious and good?

Apple vs. Asparagus is a fun and exciting way to introduce children to explore the world of fruits and vegetables. Who knew there were so many?! My twin boys comment as we read about foods they were familiar with, which were their favorites and which ones they must try next! I love how the list of fruits and veggies at the end of the book encouraged them to “check them off one by one” as they set a goal taste each one. They also notice the life lesson built into the story in that we should treat everyone with the same kindness and respect no matter our color! I would recommend this book to teachers and librarians as the lesson is great for all kids … and adults! Well done Tracy!

A wonderful lesson in not judging a book (fruit or vegetable) by its cover. It includes the alphabet, too! The book introduces children to so many different fruits and vegetables, it is bound to encourage them to try something new!

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

By Mark Twain

THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN is a novel by Mark Twain, first published in the United Kingdom in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry “Huck” Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective). It is a direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

By J.B. Cantwell

Broken. That’s what the world is now. The Long Drought is over, but the rain that falls burns like acid on the flesh.

Young Aster Wood is weak compared to the other survivors who flock to the cities, the only places where a meal and fresh water can be had.

But when he finds a ragged piece of parchment in the hidden corners of his father’s childhood home, he is pulled through the cosmos to a place no one on Earth knows exists.

Here, the grass grows green. The wolves glow like the full moon. The wizards play with ancient knowledge, delighted with the simple spells that can bring dying plants back to life and make invisible that which they do not want seen.

And Aster is healthy again.

The heart condition that has plagued him since he was a toddler is suddenly absent, and Aster finds himself running, no, flying across the countryside as if he were born to do it.

Now, he must chase down the long-lost sorcerer, Almara, to discover the truth about his own family’s past. And to learn what is yet to come for Earth’s future.

This is the perfect beginners book. My twins are four years old and they really loved this book. Their favorite part was the chapter with all the animals. They loved seeing all the pictures of the animals. It is also very educational. I would say the name of the animal and then they would repeat it. They enjoyed seeing animals that they had not seen before. They also liked the other chapters but the zoo chapter was by far their favorite.

Heart of a Hero

By Billi Tiner

Lady, an Irish Setter puppy, is leading a simple life on a farm in Ohio during the 1940’s. Lady’s biggest desire is to become an expert hunting dog like her mother. She has no idea that her life is going to take her down a path where she will find herself in the middle of incredibly dangerous situations, including a world war. On several occasions, Lady will have to find the courage to risk her life in order to save someone she loves. The loyalty and bravery that Lady shows throughout her lifetime illustrate what it truly means to have the heart of a hero.

This book is a great story on many levels. If you have a young reader interested in dogs, action stories, or WWII historical fiction then they will all find something to hold their attention in this book. If you are an adult reader that likes dogs then I am sure you will enjoy it as well.

I love books that are based on a true story. I consider myself to be pretty familiar with WWII history, but I never realized the role dogs played in the Pacific theatre.

I hope everyone has a chance in their life to know a dog like Lady.

Me Tawk Funny

By Neil McFarlane

How did Hector’s dog start talking?

Hector Dumble thinks he’s dumb. When his dog Buster starts talking to him, Hector begins to think he’s crazy too.

Things become even stranger when Hector learns that his teacher Mr Weazel has a secret identity.

How will Hector handle having a dog that can talk and a teacher who wants to take over the world?

Find out in this shaggy dog story for kids aged 6 to 13.

EXCERPT

As they were taking a short cut across the park, Buster suddenly stopped walking.
“Come on, Buster,” said Hector. “Mom’s waiting for us.”
But Buster just stood there and started making some funny noises. It wasn’t really a growl and it wasn’t really a bark. It was like a cross between the two. A ‘grark’. Then he coughed a bit and gave another grark.
Hector looked at him curiously. “Buster, are you OK?”
Buster looked at Hector, grarked again, and then he said, “Kay kay.”
“Did you just say ‘kay kay’?” Hector asked.
“Nuh nuh,” said Buster. “Missa me kay kay.”
“Huh?” Hector thought that the noises Buster was making were pretty weird.
“Missay me ko kay,” said Buster.
“Buster, are you trying to talk?” Hector said.
Buster cleared his throat again and said, “Me say me OK.”
So, thought Hector, all this studying and homework has finally made me go crazy. Now I think my dog can talk. “OK, Buster, let’s go home. Mom will be worrying.”
“Hokay Hector,” said Buster. Then he gave another grark, as if he were trying to clear his throat. “Me tawk funny.”
“You sure do,” said Hector. “Come on.”

Raymond’s Uncut Diamond

By A.M. Marcus

Developing your child’s self-esteem and confidence

Dr. Sears reports that self-esteem is your child’s passport to a lifetime of mental health and social happiness. A children’s story that explores the meaning of true value and potential is a very powerful tool for the development of any child. When you share this story, your child will be inspired to think of his or her own potential and self-worth, just like the main character.

Raymond’s Uncut Diamond takes your child on a journey with a young boy named Raymond, who is given a stone by his Grandpa and sent to the market. While trying to find the right price for his Grandpa’s stone, Raymond learns of its true value, as well as his own.

  • Will Raymond succeed in selling his Grandpa’s shiny stone?
  • Will Raymond get the advice he wants from his Grandpa?
  • What will he learn about true value in his own life?

The lesson of the book is best expressed in this inspirational quote by Joyce Meyer: “Potential is a priceless treasure, like gold. All of us have gold hidden within, but we have to dig to get it out.”

Raymond’s Uncut Diamond is a well-written, inspiring story that will help you to teach your child the meaning of the true value within. This book was created to help with your child’s:

Self-esteem: Positive self-esteem helps children in their interactions with others and their ability to face life’s many challenges. It reminds them that they are worthy of love and accomplishment, and this will stay with them into adulthood. As most children learn their self-worth from their parents, it is very important that parents share stories like Raymond’s in order to promote positive self-esteem from a young age.

“Can-do attitude”: Children who repeat “I can’t” often seek attention and acceptance through harmful behaviors. However, this book encourages your child to put in effort to become better in everything he or she does. The book reinforces the view that not being good at something is a temporary state and encourages children to accept the responsibility to strive and work to become better.

Raymond’s Uncut Diamond is an entertaining read before bedtime, with the whole family, or as self-reading for older children. Additionally, it is a great resource for teachers and counselors to share with individual students or in a class.

With vibrant, delightful illustrations and easy-to-digest lessons, children will become sharp and shining like their true value!!!

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi

By Rudyard Kipling

This is the story of a boy and his weasel, a bird and a snake, India and the British Empire. Rudyard Kipling’s dramatic tale, here excerpted from the greater volume of The Jungle Book, is the story of the loyal mongoose, Rikk-Tikki-Tavi, and the lengths to which he must go to protect his adoptive human family.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 4. In this glorious picture book, Pinkney’s accessible retelling and dramatic watercolors plunge readers into the lush garden Rikki rules and the life of the family he comes to guard. The large pictures (often spreading across much of a facing page) can barely contain the mongoose’s energy as his lithe body twists and turns, evading and attacking the cobras and the brown snake, curling in young Teddy’s arms, and basking in the family’s adulation. Pinkney’s humans are not idealized, and Rikki, while eminently pettable, is not anthropomorphized. The subdued natural colors of the animals contrast with the garden’s riot. The splash of a yellow squash blossom; Teddy’s crimson shirt; a scarlet hibiscus; or the burnished head of Darzee, the tailor bird, add grace notes to the shimmering pages. This great story has been given the loving treatment it deserves.?Patricia Lothrop-Green, St. George’s School, Newport

Frankie Dupont And The Science Fair Sabotage

By Julie Anne Grasso

Frankie Dupont is less than impressed when he has to attend the sustainable science fair with Kat and Amy. Upon his arrival, he learns that Amy’s brothers have had their robotics chip stolen.

Keen to recover the chip, Frankie questions the kids in the competition, but everyone seems to have a motive.
When baffling clues start rolling in via “Snap-Goss” instant messages, Frankie realises it will take all of his detective muscles to solve this case.

An illustrated mystery for ages 8-12

I found the mystery and solution in this story perhaps the most satisfying so far of the Frankie Dupont Mysteries, but admit that as it has been many months since reading the first two, I found that I had lost track of some characters whom I was clearly expected to know. This is frustrating at first, but soon enough the story picks up speed on its own. A quick and easy read, it is nevertheless a good mystery, with a solution that holds up, and it is even plausible that young Frankie can solve it more or less on his own, with some reasoning.

I enjoy Frankie, and find that in most of his stories he has a nice blend of unusual smarts–and some lovely flaws, including too much belief in his own skills. The books aren’t terribly realistic, and aren’t trying to be–there’s a hint of SF/Fantasy in most of them, from the super-advanced detective gadgets Frankie uses to the mysterious behavior of Enderby Manor (Book 1). That means that I have to change my mind-set a bit to read them, but most children will have no trouble with it.

I can recommend the Frankie Dupont books to any child who likes mystery. I would say it’s for fans of the Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown, but these books probably come before those in terms of reading level. The publisher lists the age range as 8-12; I would probably say the audience tends to the lower end of that span.

Hieroglyph

By W.J. Scott

“Did Ancient Egyptians visit Australia?”

13 year old TC has a secret. No one knows she possesses a supernatural power.
Can TC help her Uncle Max, an archaeologist; unearth enough evidence that Ancient Egyptians visited Australia, before he’s discredited in the media by those that want the past to stay buried?

“Some would say that I have a gift, but to me it’s always been a curse. Before I changed my mind, I tugged off my gloves and whipped my head left and right, checking to see that no one was watching. I sucked in breath and steadied my nerves then thrust my hands against the stones and touched one of the cartouches. Time and place ripped away.”

An enthralling archaeological mystery, mixing the supernatural with humour and suspense.

The first of TC’s adventures – an archaeological mystery for junior readers and above.
Family friendly.

Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers’ Favorite 5*

“W.J. Scott’s historical adventure novel, Hieroglyph: TC’s Adventures, Book 1, is exciting and fast-paced. TC wears gloves all the time, as she possesses some strange powers that allow her to travel back in time when she touches artifacts. I loved following along as she channels the story of the ancient Egyptians on their trip to Australia. TC and Max are marvelous characters who are fun to read about. Scott also brings the sights, sounds and wildlife of Australia to life in this story. Helle-Nielsen’s illustrations are superb! They are precise and minimalist, and exactly suited to the story.

Hieroglyph: TC’s Adventures, Book 1 is most highly recommended for adventure lovers of all ages.”

 Book Viral – Our Review……
“An enchanting, multi layered novel, Hieroglyph is the new YA Fantasy release from Wendy Scott and it’s sure to grab your attention as she weaves her words with a magical touch, instilling each page with a compelling sense of adventure. Clearly, she’s invested much by way of research to bring past and present together. There’s timely exposition which brings the mysteries of ancient Egypt to life whilst her young protagonist TC is confidently developed as a lead character and certainly strong enough to carry a gripping series. These alone are reasons to turn the pages, but what ultimately prevails is an innate sense of familiarity as Scott plays to our innate need for answers.

An entertaining and highly satisfying read, if Hieroglyph is your first novel from Scott, prepare to be hooked. Definitely deserving of a place on your bookshelf, it is highly recommended.”

Mother’s Love Can Conquer Any Fear!

By Subhash Kummuru

Mother’s Love Can Conquer Any Fear! is an entertaining fable about the resolve of a community and the infinite extent of a mother’s love. These story teaches how the success of a community depends on more than just one leader, it takes the participation of all members and sometimes, a hero can emerge from the crowd.
As in the very best of children’s literature, the gentle humor appeals to a younger audience while adults appreciate more subtle touches. Action and suspense cut through the age gap without obscuring the important moral lesson of the story.

Story presents a very powerful and comforting message that any fear can be conquered by the strength of a mother’s love. Important lessons, accompanied by vivid illustrations of adorable chickens, make Mother’s Love Can Conquer Any Fear! a delightful fable to share with readers of all ages.

Shoo: A Bedtime Picture Book About Cats

By Hana Goldberg

Shoo was a homeless little cat. She lived on a sidewalk, and ate things people threw away. When she could not find food she was howling and people told her to go away – but she had no place to go. Then, one day, she met a little girl named Maya…

“In our house we read it nonstop. Touching and enchanting in its simplicity. One can bet the book will easily become part of the repertoire of modern intelligent stories.” Parents and Children

“Shoo is the cutest sad cat in the world. Minimal plot and accurate description of the friendship that develops between the two heroines. Adults have something to learn as well. Brilliant.” Yediot Achronot – largest daily newspaper in Israel

Israeli author Hana Goldberg is a Lifetime Achievement Award winner from Israel’s Association of Authors and Composers (ACUM), a bestselling and critically acclaimed novelist and an A-list lyricist with hundreds of popular songs and many #1 hits. Hana is a strong and original voice in Israeli culture and a frequent guest on Israeli television shows. This little children’s book SHOO is a jewel well illustrated by Ora Ayal.

We meet a lonely homeless little sad cat named Shoo who eats leftover foods discarded by people. When she can’t fine food she yowls and people tell her to go away – but she has no place to go. One day she has a dream – not about pretty silk dresses or a singing baby doll or having wings to fly – she dreamed about having a home. Suddenly she awoke from her dream to loud noises; a truck with people unpacking furniture – and a little girl named Maya crying because in her new home she would have no friends. Shoo felt sorry for the little girl and rubbed against her legs – and Maya is no longer sad because she has found a new friend in Shoo. Maya takes Shoo home and they are fast friends – Shoo eats all the food Maya can’t finish. Both May and Shoo are happy again.

This is a first of all a beautifully written and illustrated book, and while it is meant for children on how to cope with feelings, it is so strong in the subtle way it talks about keeping pain inside that produces sadness and how to release pain and find happiness that it should be a valuable read for everyone in the family. And Hana addresses another sad problem – homelessness – and provides a bit of hope there, too. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, August 15

Angels Club

By Courtney Vail and Sandra J. Howell

Very cool premise! Love the characters, Jacinda and her friends are fun and lovable! The fact that the Angel Club members are facing many of the same obstacles as today’s pre-teens, but overcoming these challenges and learning to love their differences by drawing strength from their friendship and interests is wonderful!

I believe young teens will gain not only enjoyment but valuable lessons when dealing with negative attitudes and situations! Engaging and lively dialogue, a great book for middle school readers:)

Hot Ticket

By Tracy Marchini

Juliet Robinson is the only sixth grader in John Jay Jr. High who hasn’t received a “hot ticket” from the mysterious ticket dispenser. When one of the dorkiest kids in school – Crammit Gibson – receives a ticket before she does, Juliet decides that the ticketing system has to stop. With the help of her best friend Lucy, a Daria-esque Madeline and her almost-crush Crammit, Juliet is determined to climb a few rungs on the middle school social ladder and catch the ticket dispenser once and for all!

HOT TICKET is a laugh-out-loud middle grade mystery.

“The best thing about Hot Ticket, however, is the plot…It explores ideas of popularity and exclusion, of peer influence and self-esteem, and does it in a way that can’t help but hold the reader’s attention.” — Agrippina Legit

“I also think the concept of the tickets is a stroke of genius… the idea of an actual ticketing system is a clever – and cruel – way to highlight who is hot and who is not.” — Secrets & Sharing Soda

“The whole mystery of who the sender of the hot tickets is was well done.” — The O.W.L.

An essential parent reference, The Big Book of Why invites children to ask big questions, think big thoughts, and get answers that are accurate, engaging, level-appropriate, and based on sound educational findings. It helps prepare preschoolers for school in an interactive way—the very best way to foster learning at this age, according to research. Highly photographic and playful, this big book is an adventure in exploration.

This book is so fun, so fresh, so colorful, and so jam-packed with helpful information. I find that this group of National Geographic Little Kids First Big Books (Animals, Why, and Dinos) does “reference” for preschoolers in a way that really respects their need for information, while still keeping the books lively and on level. We love them all, and my kids could pore over this book for hours, especially the funny Why Not pages, where they can identify what’s wrong with the picture. I learned a lot too. Now I know why skin wrinkles in the tub!

The Wand-Maker’s Debate

By Jack D. Albrecht Jr. and Ashley Delay

A semi-finalist for the 2012 Best Indie Book of the Year award at thekindlebookreview.net

Companion fantasy at its finest!

A world of magic in it’s infancy….

There is a time when history begins; a time when those who live feel the need to write their story, for those who come after them to read. When recollection of events of importance cannot be left to one’s offspring alone, but must be shared with all.

Then there is a time where history transcends into legend; when strongly held beliefs are tried by fire, and traditions are questioned. There are beginnings that truly are beginnings and those that were only thought to be.

This is that world; this is truly their beginning. What they thought was knowledge, was only a foundation. They will delve into a depth they have never known, discover things they never thought imaginable, and struggle to uphold the truth rather than be consumed by it. With magic in its infancy, and a world in turmoil, an endless chain of possibilities lie dormant. Rousing them has the potential for paragon or chaos, and only time will tell.

Just as Leonardo da Vinci has mapped out the human body, and the world has begun to discover the mysteries within, so it is on Archana. With the rudimentary structure in place, they now have what it takes to discover what magic can do; both the mundane and the divine. Lore begins in these days, and mythology will forever echo their names.

The Weaving of Wells (Osric’s Wand, Book Four) is nearly complete!

Praise for The Wand-Maker’s Debate:

“This was a wonderful mix of magic, adventure and mystery with some good
laughs.” — S.J. Wist author of the Dragon Aster trilogy

“Awesome… epically awesome… It pulled at me and had me fighting the sleep I normally treasure…” Marie Borthwick

Truly Epic! What a nice surprise… This is how epic tales begin…” K. Kendall

“I’d definitely recommend Osric’s Wand; it’s unconventional magic system and colorful cast is sure to entertain any reader.”

‘This is a wonderful adventure. It has the magic of Lewis Carroll and Kenneth Grahame, the inventiveness of Roald Dahl and the writing skill of Rudyard Kipling in my opinion. It is the natural successor to Harry Potter. Brilliant!’

Baby Animals Of The World

Kids love nature at very early ages. In fact, they develop a love for certain animals as soon as they are exposed to them. Often, it is the babies of their favorite creatures that really spark their imaginations. In this case, a nature book about baby animals can be used to engage the children in the things that they have in common with the babies and also how they differ. The kids are often engaged as soon as they see these baby animals in books.

So cute! I am an animal lover I don’t care what it is I love it. I currently have a dog, parrot, and a pocket monkey :). So of course I myself even as an adult loved this book seeing all the cute baby animals. I have a 7 year old though and have another baby on the way so this book is really great for them. Your child’s face will jut light up I assure you when they read this book, my child was so engulfed in it. Constantly smiling and adding her aww and giggles.

Children are all visual learners so it is great to have the pictures to go along with what the animals are called when smaller so they can better understand and learn. And what’s more fun to learn about than baby animals.

I got the chance to receive this book free for an unbiased review but I totally wouldn’t have minded paying for it. My child has already gone through it more then once in one setting 🙂

The Rabbit Ate My Flip-Flops

By Rachel Elizabeth Cole

You can’t bring a rabbit camping. That’s what eleven-year-old Drew Montgomery’s grandparents say when his annoying little sister wants to bring their pet rabbit, Tiny, along on the trip. And Drew agrees. It’s bad enough that he will miss the release of the coolest video game of the year while he’s stuck in a cramped travel trailer for a week with his grandparents and sister. But Tiny is certain to cause trouble. Plus there are bears and eagles in the woods. And what if Tiny gets lost?

But Libby smuggles the rabbit into the trailer anyway. Now Drew’s got to keep Tiny out of trouble. And that’s not easy to do with Libby always letting him out of the cage and a pair of rabbit-hating bullies ready to let their dog chomp him if he gets too close.

Top it off with never-ending rain, bloodthirsty mosquitos, a broken toilet, stinky outhouses, angry squirrels, terrible food, and an eye-gougingly boring “schedule of activities.” Drew is about ready to take the rabbit and hitchhike home before disaster really strikes.

The Bugville Critters stories address all the major issues of growing up and are designed to appeal to the ever-growing interests of children everywhere. The wonderfully crafted stories are paired with energetic illustrations of a colorful cast of critters and playful scenes.

Bugville Jr. is an imprint of developmentally appropriate, interactive books designed to provide lessons about life, friendship, family, and our natural world to children ages 6 months and up.

I used this book during classroom guidance for kindergarteners. They thoroughly enjoyed the character of Buster Bee and enjoyed learning about what all the “busy bees” do in their neighborhood to make the community a better place. They learned about policemen, firemen, librarians, grocery store clerks, among many other careers. We had a discussion afterwards about whether boys or girls can do certain jobs, or both. I have been looking for something to use with the younger children at the school I am employed at and this book was perfect! I would recommend highly to parents and educators alike.

Azalea, Unschooled

By Liza Kleinman

In Pennsylvania, it was a clothing boutique for pets. Then a breakfast buffet in North Carolina. Then an apple orchard in Connecticut. Now, Azalea’s dad says he’s going to drive a tour bus in Portland, Maine. Through all those moves, Azalea and her older sister were homeschooled by their mom. But when they move to Portland, Azalea’s mom asks them to try unschooling—a method of learning that gives children more freedom to direct their own education. As the sisters struggle to find a delicate new balance, their world is rocked when someone sabotages Dad’s tour bus. Azalea decides it is up to her to find the culprit and hold her family together. In her fresh and funny debut middlereader novel, Liza Kleinman deftly explores the new unschooling movement as well as the challenges of moving to a new home, making friends, and finding room for differences within a family.

She is guided by her parents, friends, and community members to learn practical skills and to find her own passions though it s not as easy as it sounds. With everyday challenges come valuable lessons, and both parents and kids can be educated by this fascinating perspective. –Foreword Reviews

Freya and the Dragon Egg

By K.W. Penndorf

Freya’s family is wonderful. Just not to her. After all, her older sister loves to talk about “pulling a Freya” – a term for any mistake she makes, her younger sister publicly reads from Freya’s diary without ever getting reprimanded, and her parents hardly take notice of her. But that is all about to change when her father, Denmark’s renowned Viking archaeologist, asks her to hide a precious artifact where no one will find it. Freya jumps at the chance to prove her worth and suddenly discovers herself transported to a magical forest where she comes face to face with not only real Vikings, but a clan of sprites and a Berserk as well. In search of a way home, Freya unearths a realm of adventure and a path to greatness she is sure her family will revere.

What a Wonderful way to begin! K.W. Penndorf’s first novel and already I cannot wait to purchase the next one! She captured the character of Freya so well, that I could name some of the kids I grew up with, and perhaps even myself. Her imagination has no bounds and her mystery solving is fantastic. Congratulations K.W. I look forward to hearing from you again…soon!

I haven’t torn through a book like this since the last Harry Potter book arrived in my mailbox. Even if you’re not a middle-child, I’m sure Freya’s familial struggles will be familiar to you and you’ll root for her to be successful in her quest to show her family how special she truly is. But that’s not even half the story! There are mythical (or are they?) creatures, real viking warriors, magic, and history in a context to make it interesting for a young reader. Can’t wait for the next book!

This children’s ebook is followed by the sequel, “Vacation Hiro.” Both are middle grade chapter books.

Reviews for “Why Kimba Saved The World” from amazon.com:

“My son is 11 years old and reads books mostly about robots, wars and dinosaurs. When I handed him “Why Kimba Saved the World”, he didn’t seem to take much notice. I went to check on him later and found him reading it like his life depended on it! He came to dinner describing every detail! When he was finished reading, he wanted to know how long he had to wait for another book about Kimba. I have never seen him so excited about a book! Since then, he has been checking out books about animals from the library and started writing a book on his own! I highly recommend this book. It has opened up a whole new world for my son!”
Middle Grade Books and Animal Books For Kids

“This is a great book about what it means to be a family. Kimba, the main character, is a playful, curious, and brave feline who is met with a hard choice. It’s an entertaining read and I found myself laughing out loud and reading portions to my husband that I thought were particularly funny. I talked about the book so much he ended up reading it too and he enjoyed it just as much as I did. I’m purchasing a hard copy for my niece who loves animals and I can’t wait to give it to her!”
Cat Books and Cat Books For Kids

“Good read for kids with a lot of suspense and helps us know what our household pets might do while we are away from them. Short book and very fun. It is easy to read and for any child that has a pet cat or just likes cats.”
Chapter Books and Middle Grade Chapter Books

“Cats have a soft spot in my heart, and so does Why Kimba Saved the World, a book about cats. Well, not regular cats–though, they are amazing–but cats who have a collective secret mission. Kimba, an all-white cat with a rebellious streak, is enlisted into an agency of cats who can communicate through mirrors. They tell her of her real heritage, one where humans aren’t the loving caretakers of cats. This book captures cats with amazing accuracy, and the interactions between the cats and their owners are realistic. Who doesn’t grab their cats and hug and kiss them like their own children? (I know I do.) It’s an easy read, and it’s suitable for the whole family. Children will love Kimba’s desperate need to accomplish ridiculous missions outside and inside her home. Parents can relate to Kimba’s owners. Cats may find themselves in Kimba or Hiro or…er, that’s right. Cats can’t read! Why Kimba Saved the World will make any reader believe that cats aren’t from this world.”

Most Popular Birds In The USA

By Speedy Publishing

There are many reasons a child would enjoy a Most Popular Birds in the USA themed book. Firstly, birds have colorful feathers that offer a wide range of beauty and intrigue. Second is the fascinating stories about the locations where the flying wonders can be found. Of course, brief descriptions of their habits, including migration patterns, nesting, and food sources, can inspire the desire to learn more about a particular species. All of these reasons together can produce a book that kids will turn to time and time again until the facts can be recited by memory in casual conversation.

I have 3 children under 5 and we homeschool. THIS BOOK IS JUST WHAT THEY LOVE!! Here is why:

1-Live pictures rather than cartoon drawings.
When we go to the zoo, they are amazed by the creation in front of them and I wanted to find a book that captured that so they could look at it over and over.

2- Short words to practice reading.
My 5 year old loves to spell and sound words out. This was great for him b/c he was able to practice his reading while looking at the pictures.

3- Not a lot of words and got straight to the point.
Let’s face it. When a toddler finds a book that he/she loves, they want to read it over and over and OVER. When there are over 100 small print words per page, you end up summerizing (aka omitting) most of it. You don’t have to leave anything out in this book.

4-Very educational and meets any learning type need.

5- Bright colors and close up pictures

6- Able to take with us to run errands or Dr. appts.

If you are an educator, this may not be the BEST book for the subject of birds, but if you are looking for any of the following from above, this is good for you.

The Delaware Detective

By Dana Rongione

What do the following have in common: a muntjac deer, a toilet, and a hairless cat? They are three key factors in uncovering a treasure that may or may not exist. But for Abby and Jamie Patterson, these items are essential ingredients to fulfilling their grandfather’s greatest desire. Is the fortune real, or are the siblings following a path to nowhere as set down by an eccentric old woman? The quest is on, and time is running out.

  • While this book is appropriate for readers of all ages, gender and educational status, it was designed with the homeschool student in mind. To that end, the book contains a Glossary of Terms that can be used in the subject of Spelling and Vocabulary. The author has also included a group of questions about the story which could be used for Reading Comprehension or even Handwriting. Could this be the perfect addition to your homeschool curriculum?

I really loved this mystery book, we read Delaware Detectives as a family I read the book at bedtime over the passed week to my 10, 9 and 7 year old. Who ate the book up never wanting me to end with the chapter. You know the famous, “just one more chapter mom.” This time it was because the story was GREAT not because they didn’t want lights out. LOL On Tuesday in author Dana’s guest post she talks about the characters being real. That’s something I loved in the book my daughter can relate to Abby in so many ways that she told me she wanted to solve a mystery too. The book flowed well, caught my interest as well as my children’s. At the end of the book I really liked how author Dana Rongione reflected with some questions on the children’s behavior, as well as questions regarding how God would want them to behave. Being an LDS mother I asked my children these questions I loved the responses I received. Keep in mind though this book is not an LDS book so any religion could read and love this book. The author has kept her book clean and loving, christian based.

The Naughty Boy Who Saved Christmas

By Du

What happens when one of the naughtiest boys in the world is given the chance to destroy Christmas. For Max Douglas, opportunity comes in the form of Elliot the disgruntled elf. Will Max help Elliot pull off his evil plan, or will Max find Christmas in his heart and save the day for one and all? 50% of the net proceeds of the paperback coloring book edition go towards PSarts.org, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping arts education in public schools.

Go figure!! Halloween ends and out comes all the Christmas stuff!! But this book is a welcome surprise and a great addition to anyone’s holiday collection! I have friends with kids who will enjoy reading this book just as their parents will enjoy reading it to them. There’s also a coloring book edition which is great because kids can color it (obviously) but it allows them to put their own stamp on it. That and it keeps them from scribbling all over the wonderful illustrations of the finished book. Gonna go buy a few copies of the coloring book edition for my friends mentioned earlier in this review.

Bought my nephew a Kindle and loaded it up with a few books including this one, he ended up ignoring others. Sometimes hard to know what kids are into but he couldn’t shut up about Max (main character). Anyway this was a good find, recommended for those looking for a neatly wrapped Christmas tale thats also contemporary.

How did you get a pet squirrel?

How did you get a squirrel and dog to get along?

When I figure it out, I’ll let you know! Peanut tries to ride Sparky like a horse. Sparky does not always like this. They quarrel from time to time just like a brother and sister would, but they always make up and get along.

What did Mama say when Peanut and Sparky wrecked the house!?

Shirley Link & The Safe Case

By Ben Zackheim

Emily Neuburger, Parents.com

“Shirley Link is a new girl detective series that my daughter is crazy about. This is an amazing series, my friends! Your kids will be hooked and you’ll feel really good about it.”

Shirley Link is a 14-year old private eye, but she doesn’t want anyone to know. Whenever she uses her powers of observation she gets into trouble.

An example?

She wrote a school paper about a tough case she’d solved over summer vacation.

“It’s not a creative writing assignment, Shirley,” the teacher scolded. “You were supposed to write about what actually happened.”

“I did,” she said, louder than she meant to. But he gave her a D anyway.

So when the school principal needs Shirley’s help to catch a thief she tries to do it quietly. Can she track down a criminal who’s clever enough to steal $35,000 and the one-ton safe it was kept in? Can she do it without the whole world finding out about her detective skills?

Hint: the answer to one of those questions is, no.

A great read for kids (and their adults).

Kevin and the Seven Lions

By Martin Tiller

Nearly eaten by dinosaurs, shot at by aliens, almost drowned by a giant squid, all while trying to pay attention in school is a normal day for Kevin. How does his teacher, Mrs. Calvin, keep from going crazy?

A picture book leveled for second and third grade readers about the joy and benefit of an active imagination and creative writing.

This story is about a young boy who daydreams a lot and therefore cannot focus on his tasks. His frustrated teacher provides a notebook for Kevin to write down his daydreams, seemingly to help him learn to finish his dream and to teach him how to daydream in a constructive manner. The reader is introduced to several day dreams which are beautifully illustrated. Although this book does not specifically address how to handle daydreaming and refocus children on the task at hand, it does address that children who do not feel understood can feel accepted when the adults in their lives choose to view their nuances in a different light. This story is about honoring and nurturing creativity. It’s a good book for any grade-school child with imaginative or artistic tendancies.

Hilly Finds Her Quiet Place

By Meytal Raz-Nave

Hilly Finds her Quiet Place is the second book in a series in which Hilly is the main character.
As well shown in the first book, Hilly Colors Her Dreams, children straightaway connect to Hilly, who is a unique character with a charming personality, conveying important messages to children such as addressing their emotions, positive thinking, connecting to the peaceful self and more… These themes are presented through humor, fun, love and care.
Every child who reads the book drifts into Hilly’s world.

I invite you to join the journey and open your minds for healthy new thinking.

Hilly’s journey is derived from her goal to find her quiet place, a goal shared by us all. The events that happen during her quest are familiar and therefore easy for children to relate.
Hilly also shares and teaches the most effective and safe exercise in order to find that quiet place: Meditation. When exercising the quiet mind and awareness (meditation), we take a little break from our daily hustle and bustle and meet with the person closest to us… ourselves.

Meditation teaches us attentiveness toward our feelings and emotions and awareness of what we really feel – whether it is hunger, fatigue, apprehension, excitement, etc.

The North Pole Challenge

By Kevin George

**A WINNER IN THE NEW YORK BOOK FESTIVAL**

Flea has always been different from other students in school. He’s not smart or athletic, he’s shorter than kids five years younger than him and his facial features are so pointy that everyone avoids him. His foster mother constantly warns him to avoid attention, though Flea has no idea who’s after them. But Flea has recently discovered several abilities that change his life forever: snowy weather follows him wherever he goes, he stops snowballs in mid-flight and he builds anything in shop class in the matter of minutes despite his lack of training. An appearance on The Great Build-Off – a popular construction game show – leads him to a magical place he thought existed only in Christmas stories.

At the North Pole, Flea feels even more like an outsider. In fact, this storybook village reminds him of every school he’d ever attended, complete with overachievers and underachievers, popular elves and outcasts, even elves who aren’t afraid to march to their own beat. But during his training to become a proper builder elf, he discovers that the North Pole has an arch-nemesis bent on invading the elfish lands and ending Christmas forever. With a war looming against the South Pole, Flea’s sudden appearance at the North Pole is no coincidence, as he questions his role in the fate of the world’s greatest holiday.

“The North Pole Challenge” is not your typical Christmas story. Everyone knows about Santa Claus, his elves and the North Pole but this book provides a fresh outlook on the old familiar tales. Imagine Santa Claus as a reclusive loner, Rudolph as a narcissistic whiner, the elves as cruel party animals. And no great story would be complete without an enemy of epic proportions, another familiar Christmas name with a wicked past never before told…

Until now…

READER REVIEWS

From IndieReader.com: “Part fantasy, part coming-of-age tale, part humorous romp, THE NORTH POLE CHALLENGE is both entertaining and imaginative. As the first book of five, the narrator skillfully positions his central character to have numerous other adventures.”

From reviewer Oh My Bookness: “This is a perfect children’s tale, even good for interested adults to read who like the holiday season and a twist on characters such as Jack Frost, Old Man Winter, and the creation of Christmas. If you are interested in taking a magical ride through the holiday season this the story for you or any child.”

From reviewer Ionia Martin: “I will say, that I wish there were more books like this in the world. This book is appropriate for all age groups and would make an excellent gift for anyone. My kids adored this book and so did I. I can’t recommend this title enough.”

From reviewer Mandy2000 “I started to read this to my eight year old son before bed each night and couldn’t stop reading when I knew he was asleep!!”

Dress Up Day

By Tina Marie Kant

Come with us as we dress up. Be a princess, pilot, or chef. Maybe you think a policeman is best. Farm the land, sing in a band, or fight fires like a fireman. See a teacher, a doctor, an artist, too, and learn about the jobs they do.

From Independent Publisher News

“Children are inventive and curious by nature, and one of their favorite activities is dressing up. A pretty dress can turn a little girl into a princess and a white bonnet can make any boy feel like an experienced chef. Tina Marie Kaht relied on this universal truth about children in writing her book, Dress Up Day.” This is a beautiful story that follows a little girl and her friends as they explore new roles, “costumes,” and possibilities. This book encourages children to use their imagination, to be creative, to place themselves in colorful, complex worlds. Whether the child prefers being a policeman or a farmer, a teacher or a firefighter, T. M. Kaht’s book makes for an entertaining and inspiring read. An important idea promoted by the author is that by playing roles children learn a wealth of new things about various jobs. For example, if they dress up as a doctor, they will have fun while learning something about compassion, patience, and kindness. T. M. Kaht kept the text light by using simple rhymes which create a rhythmic flow. “Dress Up Day” was illustrated by Hatice Bayramoglu. The artist’s work renders the book all the more visually appealing, embellishing the pages of “Dress Up Day” with bright and colorful images.” -MS Media Desk, Independent Publisher News (ipublishernews.com)

Terry Treetop and the Lost Egg

By Tali Carmi

I bought the second book in the series for my little niece because she loves “Terry Treetop” and his adventures…They are always fun, and rhyming makes her laugh so much, she will be making me read this book many times..The illustrations are cute, big and colorful..It’s summer camping time and Terry finds a “lost little egg” on the ground..Terry is a good and happy boy so we follow him as he looks for the “Mom”….This is where it becomes educational because each new “Animal Mom”, shows him the importance and the different ways they take care of their own “babies”..Such as, “Sandy the Sea Turtle”, which sits on her eggs in a hole in the sand…The new Mom tells him when her eggs hatch, all her adorable “baby turtles” then run into the water where they learn how to swim…
Terry has his nickname because he is the best tree climber..He sees an “empty birds nest” way up high in a tree trunk..Terry protects the little lost egg and keeps it warm..What surprise will “Pipi” have when she returns home..

What I like about this series is that it always shows how to make new friends, teaches different aspects of animal life and to be a good child by helping others….

(For parents: even though this is a series, each book is a stand alone story and their only connection is cute, little 5 yr old boy Terry..So, you have your choices)

The Vanishings

By Jerry B. Jenkins

This series is based on the best-selling adult Left Behind series. Readers will see the Rapture and Tribulation through the eyes of four kids who have been left behind.

“Someday, Jesus will return to take his followers to heaven…. We will disappear right in front of disbelieving people. Won’t that be a great day for us and a horrifying one for them?” That was old Pastor Billings droning on again about the Rapture, and Judd was bored out of his skull. A sarcastic 16-year-old, way too cool for all this Jesus stuff, Judd had even lied about receiving Christ as his Lord and personal Savior. But poor hotheaded Judd is about to be very, very sorry.

The first book in the children’s version of Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye’s sleeper-hit Left Behind, The Vanishings introduces us to Judd (“The Runaway”) and his three imperfect companions: Vicki (“The Rebel”), Lionel (“The Liar”), and Ryan (“The Skeptic”). These four teens, for one reason or another, all failed to submit to the power of the living Lord, despite their friends’ and parents’ best efforts. And when Pastor Billings’s Rapture actually happens–sending Christian-piloted trains, planes, and automobiles crashing as millions of true believers literally vanish in the blink of an eye, leaving behind nothing but their skivvies and their W.W.J.D. necklaces–the four wayward teenagers get religion and fast. The saga continues when they receive a second chance in book two. (Ages 9 to 12) –Paul Hughes

Middle School, The Worst Years of My Life

By James Patterson

Rafe Khatchadorian has enough problems at home without throwing his first year of middle school into the mix. Luckily, he’s got an ace plan for the best year ever, if only he can pull it off: With his best friend Leonardo the Silent awarding him points, Rafe tries to break every rule in his school’s oppressive Code of Conduct. Chewing gum in class-5,000 points! Running in the hallway-10,000 points! Pulling the fire alarm-50,000 points! But when Rafe’s game starts to catch up with him, he’ll have to decide if winning is all that matters, or if he’s finally ready to face the rules, bullies, and truths he’s been avoiding.

Blockbuster author James Patterson delivers a genuinely hilarious-and surprisingly poignant-story of a wildly imaginative, one-of-kind kid that you won’t soon forget

“Patterson artfully weaves a deeper and… thought-provoking tale of childhood coping mechanisms and everyday school and family realities…. Hand this book to misbehaving, socially awkward, or disengaged boys and girls…. It might help them believe that there is a place for them in the world, no matter how dire times may seem in the present.”―School Library Journal, starred review

“A keen appreciation of kids’ insecurities and an even more astute understanding of what might propel boy readers through a book…. a perfectly pitched novel.”―Los Angeles Times

“The book’s… dynamic artwork, and message that ‘normal is boring’ should go a long way toward assuring kids who don’t fit the mold that there’s a place for them, too.”―Publishers Weekly

“Incredibly detailed and imaginative illustrations… add depth and humor…. an enjoyable story that even the most reluctant readers should enjoy.”―Library Media Connection

The Third Boy

By Esty Vaysman

Does your child avoid trying new things because of the fear of being hurt or failing?
Or could it be because none of your child’s friends have tried that new activity yet?

Author Esty Vaysman comes to children’s books with an impressive background: she is a special education teacher, has worked extensively as an integrative teacher for students with ADHD, and an alternative healer. Her studies have been in the fields of behavioral sciences and psychology as well as special education teaching. ‘It has always been my wish to bring change to the lives of others and assist them in being all they can be.’ Not limited to work with children Esty guides adults through intuitive painting and discovering its ability to create change and healing in every person, using the principles on which this method is founded. She also has trained as a therapist in intuitive writing. The illustrator for this book is Bhangga Santoso.

Though the joy of reading Esty’s book comes first, it is always interesting to note how an author summarizes the story: ‘This book tells the story of one little boy, part of a paper-cut chain, who dreams of leaving the chain and testing out all the things he sees from where he is draped on the wall, even though none of his paper-cut friends has ever done that. The influence of social pressure, the fear of being hurt, and being scared to tackle the irregular or non-standard, cause the little boy to give up on his dream. Until he finally decides to stop listening to everyone else and instead, heed his heart. He leaves the paper chain, and sets out on an adventure in the children’s playroom.’

Esty’s fluid writing style coupled with Bhangga’s fine illustrations delivers a story that shows the pleasure and joy of experiencing the new, of being courageous enough to try, of listening to our own heart, in a way that lets your child identify with facing the innovative, the unknown and the new. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 15

Clutter Land

By Denise McCabe

Joey does not like to tidy up his toys, and his mother is constantly tripping over them. He just laughs and runs away when he is asked to tidy them up. Things change when Joey gets transported to Clutter Land and he begins to see things differently.
Join Joey on his crazy adventure where he meets silly Jumbles the monkey that loves bananas and Gooey the Frog and Fluster the ostrich that never heard the word ‘tidy up’ (Activities included also)

This is a cute children’s book about a little boy named Joey who didn’t like to pick up his things when he was finished playing with them. After slipping on Joey’s toys, his Mam had decided that she’d had enough and grabbed her jar of magic dust. This magical dust would transform Joey’s room into Clutter Land.

Joey loved playing in Clutter Land, except for the fact that he and his new friends kept tripping over his toys and one another. So Joey decided to clean up his room and free up some space for his new Clutter Land friends to play.

I loved the colorful drawings in this book and the clever way that the author used to teach children the importance of cleaning up their toys.

Lionel’s Grand Adventure

By Patrick R. Hewlett

This is the second “Lionel” adventure I’ve purchased – the first I bought for my young neighbour Molly – she thoroughly enjoyed and giggled away as she read “Lionel’s Christmas Adventure,” and I downloaded this latest adventure of “Lionel” for her instead of an Easter egg. Much healthier!

Paul Hewlett writes with a sure touch for children, never talking down to them or preaching, but as Lionel often manages to get himself into trouble by taking the easy way out and using his magical “Walbaun” foot to grant wishes, parents can use Lionel’s misadventures as a jumping point for discussions. Best of all though, this is an entertaining story, with lovable characters that children are sure to take to their heart. Highly recommended for schools & libraries, a delightful read for children and parents alike.

A Boo-tiful Halloween

By Angela Shori

Gather all your ghouls and goblins for a colorful journey with the friendly monsters of A Boo-tiful Halloween.

A Boo-tiful Halloween by Angela Shori is the perfect book for night-time, tuck-em-in, reading aloud time. And, of course, it’s perfect for Halloween, which is right around the corner. I can remember reading colorfully illustrated books like this to my son when he was little and he still talks about them, and what fun we had. He would memorize them and finish each rhyme before I could even get it out of my mouth! This book is just like that — one that is perfect for banishing fears of monsters under the bed. In this book, all the monsters are cute and adorable..Five stars to the author for creating a memorable read.

Treasure Island

By Robert Louis Stevenson

A voyage for buried treasure spells trouble for cabin boy Jim Hawkins, who finds himself in the middle of a mutiny with some of the nastiest pirates to ever sail the seven seas.

Treasure Island was written 130 years ago and it remains one of the great adventure tales of all time. I originally read it when I was about ten years old and, fifty years later, I recently re-read it in the Kindle edition. The fact that the book brings as much pleasure now as it did then is an indication of how good it really is. Stevenson truly hit the ball out of the park with this one.

Much has been remarked in many of these critiques about the outdated language Stevenson used. In that regard, I have to say that the Kindle edition that I downloaded lacks one thing that was included in my old printed edition, which was published by MacMillan way back in 1924. The old edition has a set of notes following the text, explaining a lot of the nautical terms and old-fashioned jargon. It even includes the complete lyrics to “A Bottle of Rum”. I never found those notes necessary but they might prove useful to some of the younger readers, to whom such language might be unfamiliar. Personally, I think the language is part of what has given this tale it’s lasting appeal. In addition, I don’t know whether 18th Century pirates really spoke the way Stevenson has them speak in Treasure Island, but there is no doubt that it is the way they will forever be remembered, “…and ye may lay to that, Matey”!

The Magic Pencil!

By Arnie Lightning

Noah is a normal six-year-old boy living a very normal life. Little does he know that today EVERYTHING will change!

One day Noah comes home from school to see that his Uncle Eric is in town. Noah doesn’t have many friends so he loves to have company. Uncle Eric is a magician and traveler. Some have labeled him as “mad as a box of lunatic frogs.” Noah doesn’t care though. He loves his uncle and the wacky and adventurous stories he shares.

Uncle Eric gives Noah a gift from his adventures in Japan. It’s a magic pencil he acquired in an underwater volleyball match with a mermaid named Carl.

“It’s not just any pencil, of course! It’s a magic pencil! That fantastic little utensil has been in the “Carl” family for millions of years. And you’re such a gifted artist already I knew it had to come to you. You’ll be AMAZED at what happens when you start drawing with this little beauty.” -Uncle Eric (from the book)

What will Noah draw first?

Noah is not very impressed with the pencil. At first, it seems like a normal pencil in his normal life. Things will never be normal again!

Noah draws a pirate ship with lots of pirates on board. To his disbelief, the pirate ship sails right off the page. He can’t believe his eyes.

What happens when the pirates kidnap Noah’s dog?

When Noah excitedly goes to tell his Uncle Eric what happened, he hears a yelp from upstairs. When he reaches the door, he sees the pirates pulling Burt (Noah’s snow-white Highland Terrier) into the picture.
