The Collins Case

Gilbert writes with a fresh pen creating a remarkable story of God’s love, trust and protection. I really enjoyed the depth of these amazing characters whether it’s the agents, the Collins or a minor character such as Ann’s mom the author makes them seem so real and alive. There is plenty of action in a rare storyline for a Christian novel to keep the story rolling especially the shootout in South Dakota. My favorite character is Rachel a strong-willed woman despite her own fears will do whatever she must do to keep her children alive. There is sadness that I won’t spoil but it will break the reader’s heart. But there is plenty of rejoicing in what God does throughout this story as there is a lesson of hope in God’s trust and as a Christian I thought Gilbert writes it amazingly well. Recommendation- yes very highly for Christians seeking stories of God’s love and for the unsaved to experience what God can do in peoples’ lives. I can’t wait to read more from the pen of Julie Gilbert.

There is plenty of action in a rare storyline for a Christian novel to keep the story rolling especially the shootout in South Dakota. My favorite character is Rachel a strong-willed woman despite her own fears will do whatever she must do to keep her children alive. There is sadness that I won’t spoil but it will break the reader’s heart. But there is plenty of rejoicing in what God does throughout this story as there is a lesson of hope in God’s trust and as a Christian I thought Gilbert writes it amazingly well. Recommendation- yes very highly for Christians seeking stories of God’s love and for the unsaved to experience what God can do in peoples’ lives. I can’t wait to read more from the pen of Julie Gilbert.

One has to keep this constantly in mind if one wishes to understand spiritual movements and their development. Feeling and longing are the motive force behind all human endeavor and human creation, in however exalted a guise the latter may present themselves to us. Now what are the feelings and needs that have led men to religious thought and belief in the widest sense of the words? A little consideration will suffice to show us that the most varying emotions preside over the birth of religious thought and experience. With primitive man it is above all fear that evokes religious notions – fear of hunger, wild beasts, sickness, death. Since at this stage of existence understanding of causal connections is usually poorly developed, the human mind creates illusory beings more or less analogous to itself on whose wills and actions these fearful happenings depend. Thus one tries to secure the favor of these beings by carrying out actions and offering sacrifices which, according to the tradition handed down from generation to generation, propitiate them or make them well disposed toward a mortal. In this sense I am speaking of a religion of fear. This, though not created, is in an important degree stabilized by the formation of a special priestly caste which sets itself up as a mediator between the people and the beings they fear, and erects a hegemony on this basis. In many cases a leader or ruler or a privileged class whose position rests on other factors combines priestly functions with its secular authority in order to make the latter more secure; or the political rulers and the priestly caste make common cause in their own interests.

What I Want
While this book is tied into the Chop, Chop series, this book functions perfectly well as a stand alone novel, probably more so than any other book in the series. I really loved hearing the story from Marco’s point of view. While he talks about the things that make him different, and how they make him feel, he rarely focuses on those differences. Instead, he focuses on the relationships in his life (some of which are trying and difficult), and the goals that he sets for himself. I was happy when he allowed himself to find love with Bizzy, though I felt she was a bit cold to him.
I found the characters to be well developed, a particular strength of this author. These are realistic characters, dealing with real problems, ones we are all familiar with. Even if we were not born with same the specific issues as Marco, we all have felt different, ugly, self conscious. We have all longed for love, struggled in our faith journey, and dealt with loss. Books like this help us process our own issues.
I am a long time fan of this author, and she never fails to deliver. I continue to await the next book by L.N. Cronk.

By following this plan, Matthew 1 and Acts 1-2 are on the first day, and then the last gospel, John 21, is read on the very same day as Revelation 21-22.
I have added a slight twist by including a section from the book of Proverbs with each day’s reading.

Loved this book. What a wonderful story of love and redemption. I was heartbroken over Morgan, Marsha and Gram’s pain and fear, but was always hopeful that Morgan’s faith and Marsha’s feisty personality would see them through. This is also one of the most amazing love stories I’ve ever read. Who would not want a relationship like Morgan and Chuck’s? Their secret seemed to be that they included God in their relationship from the beginning and He was faithful as always.
I would recommend this book to everybody with hidden scars and isn’t that all of us to one degree or another? Maybe our scars aren’t as visible or deep as Morgan’s, but the truth, faith and forgiveness in this book is the answer for all of us. We learned from Morgan that God gives us a future and a hope when everything seems hopeless.
I am looking forward to Amanda King’s next book and hope it isn’t a long wait!

The American church has, to a great extent, exchanged covenant relationship for feelings based relationship. We stay in relationship as long as we feel good about it. Intrater points our that covenant is not based on relationship but on commitment. We are committed to one another no matter how we feel about it. Thus, when the inevitable disagreements arise, when controversial decisions must be made, when sin occurs and church discipline must be exercised, covenant is the glue that holds the church together. Otherwise, everyone goes on his or her own way, seeking new relationships, new churches where they can feel good.

Love this pocket guide. It can be used alone or as a great addition to the So Long Insecurity book by Beth. Love the Bible verses and short bits of encouragement.
Although the devotionals are very short in this booklet, it is perfect to use alone, or to use with another devotional each day. Even though each thought is short, there is a lot of depth in the points that Beth makes. The Sections in the book are on one specific area of insecurity, each section containing a number of specific points from the Bible to consider. I only use one of those points each day. . I pull all I can out of each day’s verse & comments, and type them into a journal, then add my my own thoughts and/or prayer after each. So simple, yet profound!!

She weaves spiritual truth in with the reality of “if you don’t have it, don’t spend it”. This is the perfect e-book as we head into the holidays, a season wrought with consumerism and overspeanding. I wish the ladies in my church had a ministry for young wives; teaching them how to cook, love their husbands and build relationships! What a great and practical idea! Reading this book just might make you hungry as you read many yummy sounding recipes! Some of which can be found on the authors website! This book would be a wonderful book to share with a friend who doesn’t know the Lord, as the plan of salvation is clearly presented in a non threatening way. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I’m not LDS in membership. I have many friends that are and so I learn a lot about the religion. I was so happy to get my new tablet to find all of these wonderful e-books I can read in my leisure. This particular book had gotten a lot of raves in Relief Society and to find it as free, I knew I had to download it.
First off, does Uchtdorf wife writes for him? If not, he’s really in touch with the female perspective… and what a beautiful perspective this man has. I just wish this book was longer. But OMG its so beautifully written and stirs the soul so deeply. There are wonderful quotes from other notable people in it as well… not to mention most of what Uchtdorf writes can easily be placed in the history book of quotes.
My friend has been going through some odd times, and I think she thinks I’m crazy reading LDS literature all of the time and usually finds whatever I learn to be odd proselytizing, but this is the first of the LDS commentary she didn’t turn away and found it to be quite beautiful.

I love the unique premise and surprise of a Japanese man marooned on an island in contemporary times without knowledge of the end of WWII. The story is so well written that I began to believe the narrator and the Japanese man were real people. I would love to speak with the author, Neil Thrussell, to learn where he got the idea for this amazing tale.
The story is about a hard core pilot/businessman who returns to the site of a plane crash to do some soul searching. He thinks he will be alone on an island only to encounter an older man who becomes his spiritual teacher and father figure. He learns about himself and the ways of the Universe from the Japanese master, and the master learns he can trust and come to love an American man as he would his own son.
A Warrior’s Heart: The Awakening is a wonderful way to discover spiritual truths in a story format. I was touched by the gradual transformation of both characters in the story. Graham, the narrator discovers that all things are sacred and to do everything with love. The slow pace of life on an island allows time for deep meditation, journal writing, fishing, sword fighting, and labor taught by the master teacher. Master Akio, the Japanese man, becomes spiritual teacher and friend to someone sent to him by the Universe. Both men develop a fondness and deep reverence for one another.
I highly recommend this book to any and all spiritual seekers as well as those who learn though stories.

William sent me a copy of this book, my very first ever request to review, so I’m honoured and delighted to do so! Now I’m an anti-Harry Potter sort of person, so when I saw an amulet was involved I was a little wary. I also come from a completely different writing culture. I needn’t have worried! William has the gift of writing , well what I’d call young adults stories, though anyone could read this and be blessed. He has that knack which pulls you into the perspective of Brian, and tells the tale from a child of his age’s point of view. The whole text has for me that wonderful fairytale feeling that I love in the Elizabeth Goudge stories such as the Little White Horse.
Brian is maybe old for his age due to the abuse he has suffered in his life but he also acts just like a teenager. His journey to find the Living water is has great narrative tension and I’m glad that it went on long enough after the climax to make the ending balanced and it sort of ties in to the supernatural of the story.
I began thinking, ok, so this is a magical story in many ways, just how would this appeal to any teenager? Its adventure with a twist of romance, reality and excitement. Yet as a Christian, how is this tale justified. (see my standpoint above). Of course William related this to the Native Americans, and has a bible verse. Then it hit me, maybe I’m being dense, and William had this in mind but the whole book is one huge allegory or metaphor. Come to me and drink the streams of living water (John 4, v 13-14) . As Christians, we all seek and drink the living water of Christ and our lives should then reflect and bless all around them. This is what Brian and Rachel did with their lives. It gives you the gospel message that through Christ we can be all things and bless others. This book does it in a way acceptable to the teenage mind if they can see it! Bravo!

Barriers to change are identified and strategies for addressing them are discussed (e.g., unforgiveness, envy/jealousy, fear). The book also includes the author’s personal stories (e.g., not feeling loved as a child) and experiences of others and the impact of change in their lives. These personal accounts provide further clarity and significance of the steps she recommends. The book is a pleasure to read!
Practical, brief exercises are also provided to facilitate the application of the seven steps. There are some rough edges on the editorial side, but also brilliant insight and some beautifully clear writing which more than make up for those short rough spots which i imagine will be fixed as readers respond.
Although I enjoyed reading this book as an individual read on an airplane. Excellent questions at the end of each chapter made me think that Psychology and The Bible would be a perfect small group book… whether in the classroom or a Bible study or even marriage / parenting group. A definite Recommended read.
